2001 Benefit

The Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago is proud to honor Bernard M. Judge and John F. Sandner at its annual Bill of Rights in Action Awards Benefit on Wednesday, November 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Chicago Cultural Center. CRFC also is pleased to recognize Barry Elementary School in Chicago as the 2001 Education for Democracy School.

Each year CRFC presents the Bill of Rights in Action Award to honor those individuals and organizations who, through their professional and community endeavors, provide exemplary models of citizenship for our nation's youth.

Judge, Editor and Publisher of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and Chicago Lawyer, has devoted his career in journalism to defending the First Amendment and the Constitution. Starting as a reporter at the City News Bureau in 1965, he later joined the Chicago Tribune and held management positions there as well as with the Chicago Sun-Times and City News Bureau before joining the Law Bulletin Publishing Company. Judge has participated in virtually every major CRFC program and served as Chairman from 1996 until 1998.

Sandner, Special Policy Advisor and Former Chairman of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, has dedicated his personal and public life to serving the needs of young people in Chicago and the Metropolitan community. Also a member of the CRFC Board of Directors, Sandner was recognized in 1996 by former President George H. W. Bush with a Points of Light Award for excellence in corporate community service.

Barry, a Chicago Public School, offers a variety of CRFC programs to all of its students through a remarkable cadre of teachers and an outstanding principal. “I'm thrilled to see the program growing throughout the school,” said Barry principal Alice Vila. “It's enriching for both students and staff. Students not only gain important ‘democracy’ knowledge and skills, they use what they learn throughout their day.”

Peggy Davis of the Chief Executive Office of the Chicago Public Schools will present the award to Barry. Chicago Sun-Times columnist Steve Neal will make the presentation to Judge, and Schwarz Chairman & CEO Andrew J. McKenna will make the presentation to Sandner.

"Both Bernie and Jack represent the great American tradition of engaged civic participation," said CRFC Board of Directors Chair Paula J. Morency. "We are honored to recognize their remarkable achievements as well as those of Barry Elementary School."

Non-profit and non-partisan, CRFC has conducted democracy education programs in Chicago and across the country for more than 25 years.

Benefit tickets are $75 each. For information contact CRFC at 312/663-9057 or crfc@crfc.org.
