In order to successfully complete almost any of the VOICE lessons, it is
necessary that students learn to respond to literary material by making
inferences, drawing conclusions, and relating what they read to real-life
situations. A variety of literary sources are used including newspapers,
journals, primary texts, legislation, text books, and both non-fiction and
fiction.

The writing assignments throughout this course focus on organizing thoughts,
expanding ideas, and writing for specific audiences. These exercises involve
using persuasive, expository, and descriptive writing techniques.

One focus of VOICE is to develop a student's ability to speak and listen in a
way that is appropriate to the message and audience. These lessons involve
students in group and individual work to practice communication skills.

VOICE requires students to receive and present a variety of information using
different techniques. Mock trials, oral presentations, debates, questions and
answer, and other language arts are utilized. Students are exposed to a variety
of reference material and learn to consider their accuracy and context.
Through this process, students must constantly generate questions and explore
solutions to conflicts and disputes.

Throughout these units, students design surveys, polls, and other techniques to
gather data. Once collected, students organize the data into graphs and
tables which are used as resource guides from which to make predications or
reach conclusions. As with all of the State Goals, the service project in Unit
VII leaves room for further work aligned with this State Goal #10.

Sections of VOICE require students to use data to produce reasonable
explanations for given scenarios and real life situations. Further, the
service project in Unit VII provides a great opportunity to focus on
technological and scientific inquiry.

VOICE, as law-related education, provides extensive information about American
political systems and the principles and values on which our constitutional
democracy is based. Students learn about the branches of government and
practice exercises such as law- making, law enforcement, and mock trials. This
program is focuses on facilitating discussion about our political system and
how students can positively participate.

VOICE focuses on a number of paramount moments in U.S. history, and addresses
both national and local effects. Course work includes lessons on the founding
of the colonies, the American Revolution, Salem Witch trials, immigration,
Constitutional Law cases including religion cases and freedom of speech, and
the implications and lasting effects of these turning points in American
History.

discussed, as well as how these institutions respond to national, state, and
local government.

The service project of VOICE provides a great opportunity for classes to get
involved in community public health campaigns that encourage and support others
in making positive health choices. A project can be designed around
identifying health risks and exploring how social behavior and individual
decisions can reduce health risks.

A focus of this curriculum is on promoting the importance of, and teaching the
skill to learn, conflict management and resolution. Decision-making that
promotes well-being is incremental to many of the lessons in VOICE. Causes and
consequences of decision-making are explored as well as key elements of the
decision-making process.
