VOICE AND STATE GOALS

STATE GOAL #1 Read with understanding and fluency. Unit I : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 Unit II: Lessons 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 Unit III : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Unit IV : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Unit V : Lessons 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Unit VI: Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Unit VII: Lessons 1, 2, 3 These lessons in the VOICE curriculum involve reading and require students to connect ideas, place words in context, use information to form and refine questions, as well as summarize readings for purpose and content.
STATE GOAL #2 Read and understand literature representative of various societies, eras, and idea. Unit I: Lessons 1, 3, 6, 7, 8 Unit II: Lessons 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 Unit III : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Unit IV : Lessons1, 2, 4, 5 Unit V : Lessons 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Unit VI: Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Unit VII : Lessons 1, 2, 3 In order to successfully complete almost any of the VOICE lessons, it is necessary that students learn to respond to literary material by making inferences, drawing conclusions, and relating what they read to real-life situations. A variety of literary sources are used including newspapers, journals, primary texts, legislation, text books, and both non-fiction and fiction.
STATE GOAL #3 Write to communicate for a variety of purposes . Unit I : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 Unit II : Lessons 3, 4, 6 Unit III : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Unit IV: Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 Unit V: Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10 Unit VI: Lessons 1, 5, 6, 7, 9 Unit VII : Lessons 1, 2, 3 The writing assignments throughout this course focus on organizing thoughts, expanding ideas, and writing for specific audiences. These exercises involve using persuasive, expository, and descriptive writing techniques.
STATE GOAL #4 Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations. Unit I : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 Unit II : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Unit III: Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Unit IV : Lessons 1, 2, 3 Unit V : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Unit VI : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 Unit VII : Lessons 1, 2, 3 One focus of VOICE is to develop a student's ability to speak and listen in a way that is appropriate to the message and audience. These lessons involve students in group and individual work to practice communication skills.
STATE GOAL #5 Use the language arts to acquire, assess, and communicate information. Unit I : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 Unit II: Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Unit III: Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Unit IV : Lessons 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Unit V : Lessons 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 Unit VI : Lessons 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 Unit VII : Lessons 1, 2, 3 VOICE requires students to receive and present a variety of information using different techniques. Mock trials, oral presentations, debates, questions and answer, and other language arts are utilized. Students are exposed to a variety of reference material and learn to consider their accuracy and context. Through this process, students must constantly generate questions and explore solutions to conflicts and disputes.
STATE GOAL #10 Collect, organize and analyze data using statistical methods; predict results; and interpret uncertainty using concepts of probability. Unit I : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 Unit II : Lesson 2 Unit III : Lesson 3 Unit IV : Lesson 3 Unit V: Lesson 2, 6, 7, 8 Unit VII: Lesson 1, 2, 3 Throughout these units, students design surveys, polls, and other techniques to gather data. Once collected, students organize the data into graphs and tables which are used as resource guides from which to make predications or reach conclusions. As with all of the State Goals, the service project in Unit VII leaves room for further work aligned with this State Goal #10.
STATE GOAL #11 Understand the processes of scientific inquiry and technological design to investigate questions, conduct experiments and solve problems. Unit I : 6 Unit VII : 1, 2, 3 Sections of VOICE require students to use data to produce reasonable explanations for given scenarios and real life situations. Further, the service project in Unit VII provides a great opportunity to focus on technological and scientific inquiry.
STATE GOAL #13 Understand the relationships among science, technology and society in historical and contemporary contexts. Unit VII : Lessons 1,2 ,3 The service project provides a great opportunity to teach about the effects of discovery and applications of technology in student's lives and communities. Students can explore the possible benefit and harm of advances in society and how they have effected their personal lives and communities.
STATE GOAL #14 Understand political systems, with an emphasis on the United States. Unit I : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 Unit II : Lessons 2, 5 Unit III : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Unit IV : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Unit V : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Unit VI : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Unit VII : Lessons 1, 2, 3 VOICE, as law-related education, provides extensive information about American political systems and the principles and values on which our constitutional democracy is based. Students learn about the branches of government and practice exercises such as law- making, law enforcement, and mock trials. This program is focuses on facilitating discussion about our political system and how students can positively participate.
STATE GOAL #16 Understand events, trends, individuals, and movements shaping the history of Illinois, the United States and other nations. Unit I: Lesson 6, 7, 8 Unit II : Lesson 5 Unit III : Lesson 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Unit IV : Lesson 4 Unit V : Lessons 6, 9, 10 Unit VI : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Unit VII : Lessons 1, 2, 3 VOICE focuses on a number of paramount moments in U.S. history, and addresses both national and local effects. Course work includes lessons on the founding of the colonies, the American Revolution, Salem Witch trials, immigration, Constitutional Law cases including religion cases and freedom of speech, and the implications and lasting effects of these turning points in American History.
STATE GOAL #18 Understand social systems, with an emphasis on the United States. Unit I: Lessons 6, 7, 8 Unit II : Lessons 5 Unit III : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Unit IV : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Unit V : Lessons 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 Unit VI : Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Unit VII : Lessons 1, 2, 3 This curriculum encourages students to explore their roles as both individuals in and members of a society. Major social institutions are identified and discussed, as well as how these institutions respond to national, state, and local government.
STATE GOAL #22 Understand principles of health promotion and the prevention and treatment of illness and injury . Unit IV : Lessons 3, 4, 5 Unit VII : Lesson 1,2, 3 The service project of VOICE provides a great opportunity for classes to get involved in community public health campaigns that encourage and support others in making positive health choices. A project can be designed around identifying health risks and exploring how social behavior and individual decisions can reduce health risks.
STATE GOAL #24 Promote and enhance health and well-being through the use of effective communication and decision-making skills. Unit IV : Lessons 3, 4, 5 Unit VII : Lessons 1, 2, 3 A focus of this curriculum is on promoting the importance of, and teaching the skill to learn, conflict management and resolution. Decision-making that promotes well-being is incremental to many of the lessons in VOICE. Causes and consequences of decision-making are explored as well as key elements of the decision-making process.
