OVERVIEW
Throughout the United States, a disproportionate percentage of racial minorities come in contact with the juvenile and criminal justice systems. The issue of disproportionate minority contact (DMC) raises difficult questions for the American criminal justice system. Suspicions about DMC threaten victim cooperation with police and prosecutors, the participation of minority jurors, and the validity of judicial decisions among members of minority and majority communities alike. Most fundamentally, DMC challenges the basic American assumption that everyone receives "equal justice under law."

To address these concerns, the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago (CRFC) will convene a Symposium on Disproportionate Minority Contact. The Symposium will focus on what is and is not known concerning the causes of DMC and promising strategies in reducing it. The Symposium will also feature a compendium of resources and strategies, in print and on CD-ROM, which will feature this information, proceedings from the Symposium, and additional resources from the conference sponsors.
