Open to middle school teachers in Chicago and the metropolitan area, this institute is designed to give teachers the tools to enable students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Constitution and Bill of Rights in order to meet the U.S. Constitution Test requirement. Materials and assistance identifying lawyers to work in classrooms provided. Registration is $50 and space is limited. Free materials are included and CPDUs are available.

EDUCATING FOR DEMOCRACY INSTITUTE
(GRADES 2-5)

This institute features CRFC's programs for elementary and primary grades. VOICE (Violence Prevention Outcomes in Civic Education) combines law, peer mediation, and service learning. Primary VOICE enhances reading comprehension and citizenship for younger students. Instructors include experienced educators, lawyers, and police officers or SROs. Registration is $25 and space is limited. Free materials are included and CPDUs are available.

HIGH SCHOOL INSTITUTES
EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW INSTITUTE

CRFC's Equal Justice Under Law program brings together high school students with legal scholars and policymakers to enhance their understanding of a specific U.S. Supreme Court decision and a related public policy question for Illinois. The program occurs during the fall semester.

This one-day institute will provide teachers access to legal scholars and policy experts, case materials, public policy analysis tools, and interactive strategies necessary to address the U.S. Supreme Court case and Illinois public policy featured in the 2007 Equal Justice Under Law program.

Participation in the institute is required for teachers interested in having their students participate in either of the parallel Equal Justice Under Law conferences in Springfield (November) and Chicago (December).

Registration Fee: $100.00 per teacher.
Six CPDUs available.

2007 Supreme Court Update Summer Institute

This one-day institute will feature a leading decision from the October 2006 Term of the Supreme Court of the United States. Participants will meet with legal scholars, former U.S. Supreme Court clerks, and other experts to review and discuss the implications of the feature case. Participants also will receive resources about the issue, the Court, and the decision along with classroom-ready materials.

The 2007 Supreme Court Update is open to high school teachers of law, government, and U.S. History at accredited Illinois high schools.

Registration Fee: $100.00 per teacher.

Institute for Secondary Educators


Teaching Youth about the Law

Developed by the Constitutional Rights Foundation, the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago, and Street Law, Inc., this two-day national institute is designed to help teachers in grades 9-12 to:
  • Learn about law-related education (LRE) methods and strategies-such as discussing controversial issues, using simulations, and working with legal resource people-and how to apply them
  • Identify and use LRE resources in planning and teaching
  • Gain a deeper understanding of LRE best practices using curricular materials from CRF, CRFC, and Street Law
The National Law-Related Education Institute for Secondary Educators will be hosted by the law firm of Schiff Hardin LLP in the Sears Tower in downtown Chicago. Participants will receive curriculum materials, breakfast, and lunch for both days of the institute. Participants are responsible for their own dinner expenses, transportation and lodging arrangements (a block of rooms has been reserved for participants in downtown Chicago at $92.00 per night).

Deadline: April 2, 2007.
All applicants will be notified of their acceptance by April 16, 2007.
Upon acceptance to the institute, a registration fee of $100 is due by Friday, May 4, 2007.
