CRFC offers "The Challenges to Democracy" for Illinois high school teachers
July 31-August 4 in Chicago. The institute will be hosted by the Chicago
Historical Society and the U.S. District Court and features:

Case studies of Terry v. Ohio (1968) and Illinois v. Wardlow (2000);
-
training in the Constitutional Rights Foundation's Challenge curriculum
series: The Challenge of Violence, The Challenge of Information, and The
Challenge of Diversity; and
-
a national teleconference on judicial independence co-sponsored by the
Administrative Office of the United States Courts

Lessons, strategies, and materials for teaching about the American Jury system
-
$250 stipend for participants who complete the institute
-
Up to 30 clock/contact hours applicable toward Continuing Education Units
[CEU's] or Continuing Professional Development Units [CPDU's]

CRFC will host a national training for Violence-prevention Outcomes in Civic
Education August 7-11 in Chicago. The institute, supported in part by the
Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention of the United States
Department of Justice, will convene fourth and fifth grade teachers from across
the country to learn the VOICE curriculum and interactive teaching methods of
law related education.
Training will include:

Field experience opportunities

VOICE and state learning standards

Critical thinking exercises

VOICE and literature choices
Registration is $100 and must be submitted together with the application not
later than June 15, 2000. Space is limited to 20 teachers. Accepted applicants receive coach airfare, lodging and per diem, materials and stipend for evaluation.
