ABOUT THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS FOUNDATION CHICAGO

The Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago (CRFC) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization which strives to help young people understand our country's legal and governmental system and to give them the skills and attitudes necessary to serve their communities and nation as responsible citizens.

CRFC provides citizen education programs that build self-esteem and motivate youth to learn through their participation. Citizen education encompasses the concepts and information about the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights; rights and responsibilities under the law; active and responsible participation in society; legal and economic systems; and ethics. The underlying focus of all programs is the teaching of the values of the Constitution.

CRFC works toward achieving its goals by training teachers and resource persons, developing materials for the classroom, and conducting programs for students.

In 1962, educators and law-related professionals established the Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF) in Los Angeles. Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago opened in 1975. CRFC's success depends on countless hours of service from members of the professional community and grants and contributions from individuals, government, corporations, and foundations.

Our ancestors saw the Constitution as a second chance, a new beginning, and rejoiced in that prospect. But—as the founding generation knew too well—democracy is hard work. Maintaining our freedom requires an alert, knowledgeable, committed citizenry.

    ABOUT THIS DIRECTORY

This is the third edition of the “Chicago Directory of Law-Related Education Resources.” It was originally produced in 1981 by the Chicago Bar Association's Special Committee on Law-Related Education in conjunction with the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago and the Chicago Street Law Project. It has been an extremely useful tool for educators who are looking for instructional aids such as speakers, brochures, and field experiences to complement their teaching of law-related education.

The Law Specialization Index in this directory lists agencies which disseminate information on specialized areas of law.

The organizations are listed alphabetically throughout the Directory. Listed for each organization is the name of the contact person (where applicable), address, phone number, fax number, and E-mail and Internet addresses (where applicable). Following this information is a brief description of the organization and the resources it offers.

A feedback sheet has also been included for your suggestions and comments regarding the Directory and identifying additional agencies to be added in future revisions of the Directory.

Should you have any questions concerning this directory, please direct them to:

CHECKLIST FOR A SUCCESSFUL FIELD EXPERIENCE

A field experience—in contrast to a field trip—allows students to learn and retain crucial information in an interactive way. Through field experiences, students remember what they learn because it emerges in context. Here are a few general principles to consider:

    OBJECTIVES

How does the field experience fit into your larger curricular goals? Why do you want to visit the site? What do you want your students to learn? Is the site the best way for them to learn this information? How will you assess their learning?

    STRATEGIES

A variety of strategies—such as presentations, audiovisual resources, working in task groups, and interviewing key personnel—make a field experience more than just “show and tell.” Discuss with the site personnel the different options available for your students.

    PREPARATION

Before the experience, explain the purpose of the visit and your expectations. Have students prepare questions they would like to have answered. Well-prepared students make positive impressions on adults, who in turn respond at a level which best serves your students.

    LOGISTICS

    FOLLOW-UP

GUIDELINES FOR THE EFFECTIVE USE OF OUTSIDE RESOURCE

    PERSONS

Appropriate use of visitors has been found to be strongly associated with reduction in delinquency. Adult role models can model behaviors and attitudes sought to be developed in students, create non-threatening adult associations, and develop positive student attitudes toward the law. Because most visitors are not trained teachers, they have optimal impact when used as resource persons rather than as instructors.

The checklist of suggested procedures will help ensure a successful classroom visit by a resource person. The key to a good visit is to be clear about what the teacher wants to do and share those expectations with the resource person in advance. This checklist can also be modified to fit the needs of a field experience.

Before the resource person comes, he or she should know:

In advance of a visit by an outside resource person, students should receive preparation to maximize their thoughtful participation when the visitor is present (e.g., having students prepare questions for possible use on the day of the visit).
