An eighth grade class at Chicago’s
Bell
School won the Illinois Project Citizen Portfolio Competition in 2000.
After realizing that guests to the school were often confused by where to
enter, the Bell eighth graders and their teacher,
Maryan Fine
, created a mosaic to clearly and attractively mark their school entrance.
Bell Principal Bob Guerico
said, “I’m truly excited that the children and the teacher have taken such a
participatory role. Often people can identify a problem, but what we teach at
Bell is to propose solutions, which this group did.”
A portfolio created by the students, documenting their project from start to
finish competed in the National Project Citizen Portfolio Contest held in
conjunction with the National Conference of State Legislatures in Chicago in
July of 2000.
