Simulated Legislative Hearings

FAQ Timetable of Events How To Get Involved


Classes involved in Project Citizen may take part in regional noncompetitive hearings. These hearings, held at a variety of locations give students the opportunity to present their service learning projects to community members, ask and answer questions, and receive feedback and recognition for their efforts and presentations. The hearings also allow students to reflect on their projects, improve their public speaking skills, receive tips on implementing their action plans, and view projects completed by students at other schools.

Illinois Hearings - Spring 2007
In the spring of 2007 hearings were held in Carbondale, Chicago, Downer’s Grove, Highland Park, Morton Grove, Red Bud, Wauconda. Hearing judges representatives from the Chicago Public Schools, the Office of U.S. Representatives Bobby Rush and Janice Schakowsky, the Secretary of State’s Office and as well as variety of local policymakers, and representatives from colleges and law firms.

Pershing West (Chicago) students from another class presented their project on school desegregation.
Elm Place Middle School (Highland Park) students presented a project water pollution at a hearing in March.
Immaculate Conception students (Columbia) presented their project on tree planting in their community.
St. Hyacinth (Chicago) students presented their project on sexual harassment in the community.
Coulterville Elementary School (Coulterville) students presented on improving the taste and nutritional value of their school lunches.
Talcott Fine Arts and Museum Academy (Chicago) students presented on incorporating life and health skills into the curriculum at their school.
Decatur Classical School (Chicago) students presented on adding a seventh and eighth grade to their currently k-6 school.
Herrick Middle School (Downer's Grove) students presented their project on improving the recycling system in their city.
Wauconda Middle School (Wauconda) students presented their project on recycling in their school.
Our Lady of Charity School (Cicero) students presented their project on the problem of truancy.
