The Edward J. Lewis II Lawyers in the Classroom Project

NEW PROGRAM FEATURES IN 2009

Thanks to the remarkable support for the Kapnick Challenge, the Edward J. Lewis II Lawyers in the Classroom introduced the following new features in 2009.

LAWYERS IN THE CLASSROOM CURRICULUM

The new curriculum for attorneys and teachers contains interactive lessons for students in grades 2-8 including grade-appropriate case studies and mock trials.

CIVIC TOOLKIT

All teachers also receive civic toolkits with additional lessons and resources to enhance the curriculum to help their students better understand our legal system as well as the role of citizens in our democracy. Supplementary lessons are added to the toolkits as appropriate.

LITERACY EVENTS

Attorney volunteers are piloting a new program at select Lawyers in the Classroom schools. Attorneys and teachers are working together to use State v. Wolf, an interactive mock trial DVD with second and third grade students. Based on the story of The Three Little Pigs, students watch as B.B. Wolf is tried for destroying the pigs' homes and then take on the roles of jurors to reach a verdict. The DVD and accompanying materials will give teachers and attorneys maximum flexibility and provide students with opportunities to practice important skills as they look carefully at both sides of a story.

EXPANSION DOWNSTATE

Every eighth grade class in the Champaign Public Schools is now partnered with a team of local attorneys. Almost 800 students and their teachers at all three Champaign public middle schools worked with over two dozen local attorney volunteers in 2008-2009 as part this exciting expansion of the program.

Funding for these new initiatives was graciously provided by the following sponsors of the Edward J. Lewis II Lawyers in the Classroom Program:
