WHAT IS THE EDWARD J. LEWIS II LAWYERS IN THE CLASSROOM PROGRAM?
Coordinated by Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago (CRFC), the Edward J. Lewis II Lawyers in the Classroom program partners attorneys with elementary classes to help students understand the U.S. Constitution and our legal system. CRFC trains attorneys to lead interactive lessons, provides teaching materials, and matches them with schools.
WHO IS INVOLVED?
Teams of attorneys from the Chicago area are partnered with Chicago public Elementary School teachers and their students in 2nd – 8th grade social studies
classes. Currently, almost 500 attorneys are working with 80 Chicago area
schools through this program.
WHERE AND WHEN DOES THE PROGRAM TAKE PLACE?
Attorney teams are asked to visit their partner school a minimum of three times throughout the school year. Trainings are held at Chicago area law firms and
lessons are conducted at the partner schools.
WHY GET INVOLVED?
Attorney volunteers provide students with knowledge based on real life experiences, help develop their critical thinking skills, and offer young people an opportunity to have a variety of positive adult role models.
"The kids are amazingly insightful. The process by which they struggle to understand and apply the concepts and values embodied in the Bill of Rights to the problems we present to them is a wonderful thing to see."
