Project: Silence the Violence
Under our ECHO (Everyone Can Help Out) Project, we are going to
assist in facilitating activities and exhibitions and contests:
poetry, art, and essays across the curriculum focusing on "Silence
the Violence: May 25-29, 1998." There has been an increase in the
number of our students who have been recent victims of violence,
even homicide. Violence to youth by youth is reaching into the
schools and is a serious health issue. WE wish to address
Relationship Violence through positive approaches emphasizing
prevention and peaceful conflict resolution.

Project: Protecting Our Youth in School
We are using students in three classes to develop a questionnaire that will help the deans at Downers Grove South assess attitudes of students before implementing a schoolwide violence prevention program. Students will do surveys and video interviews and tabulate the results to find a pattern of behavior and problems that need to be addressed to reduce unwanted behavior in school.

Project: Relationship Violence Awareness
Students will be addressing the issue of relationship violence. A speaker from the Elgin Crisis Center will first give a presentation in class, and then help with the development of a survey that will be distributed throughout the school. Following the survey, a resource pamphlet will be developed and handed out The final activity will be a school assembly consisting of student skits and a speaker on relationship violence.

Project: Peer Mediation Awareness Project
Participating students will analyze and publicize an existing peer mediation program in their school. Trained student mediators, under the guidance of adult sponsors, help resolve disputes between students peacefully. Students involved in the Youth Summit will interview mediators, sponsors, and individuals whose disputes have been mediated throughout the program. They will develop a posterboard, featuring photos and quotes from the interview, which will publicize the program.

Students will conduct the Youth Summit poll with randomly selected juniors, seniors, and teachers at their school. They will compare and contrast the results of their poll.

We will hire a local projection company to film a hate crime video that will be shown before school on our television system.

Project: Heightening Awareness of Relationship Violence
We will heighten awareness of the different forms of relationship violence for our school and community. Students will form research groups which will focus on different types of relationship violence. Each group will: research the topic, create a poster for display in school, display statistics on a T-shirt, post a list of relevant organizations, cover the service project in the school newspaper, publicize the school’s peer mediation program, and ask the local newspaper to cover the project.

Project: The Causes of School Violence
Our service project will focus on recognizing and understanding the causes of conflict. Our target audience will be local elementary students who will be asked to complete a brief survey. The peer mediators will also conduct various activities that promote positive attitude and the importance of being violence-free role models. Peer mediators have conducted twelve workshops for elementary students in the community, and have formed a pen pal system in which they act as a role model to elementary students.

Project: Peaceful Conflict Resolution
Students will develop and lead "Peace Conferences" for junior high students. These conferences will highlight games and workshops that will teach the younger students the importance of peaceful conflict resolution, and help them develop the problem-solving and communication skills necessary to resolve conflicts peacefully.

Students working in small groups will conduct the Youth Summit poll in their school, with local public school students, and with local adults. They will compare and publicize the results.
Streamwood High School Service Project

Project: Hate Crime Awareness Project
Students will speak with an area police officer about the number of hate crimes committed in their area. They will then interview other students in an attempt to learn the extent of the problem in their school. They will compare the number of hate crimes they discover with the number reported to the police. If the interviews reveal that many hate crimes go unreported, they will attempt to learn why this is the case.

Project: Protecting Our Youth from Violence Poll
Using the Illinois Youth Summit Survey, participating students will
canvass the entire student body (approximately 1,400 students) and a sample of adult respondents. Results will be tabulated and analyzed by the participants, then posted throughout the school and displayed at the Illinois Youth Summit. Policy recommendations based on the survey results also will be formulated by the students and presented to the Washington High School Local School Council.
Williamsfield High School Service Project

Project: Discovering the Extent of Relationship Violence in a Small Community
Students will conduct an initial study of the extent of relationship violence in Williamsfield (located in Knox County). Students will employ a two-step approach: a student survey of the entire student body—separate from the Youth Summit survey; and a series of informative posters around school identifying the signs of relationship violence, with an anonymous number to call for those abused. The temporary "hotline" will be staffed by students on a volunteer basis. Results from the questionnaire, as well as significant data from the hotline, will be analyzed and presented.
