LEAPP (Law Education And Positive Participation)--An Alternative to Suspension
The Legal Circle
, Fall 1999
Thousands of students are suspended each year in districts all across the
country. District U-46 will field test an alternative to suspension program
developed this summer in cooperation with CRFC.
LEAPP (Law Education And Positive Participation) combines training in anger
management, mediation, law-related education, and service and is supported by a
21
st
Century grant from the U.S. Department of Education thanks to U.S.
Representative Dennis Hastert and Speaker of the House.
According to Steve Klein, Curriculum Coordinator, "Too many kids are
slipping through the cracks. We believe this program is a realistic and viable
alternative to suspension and will help
change negative behaviors before they become habits." Marlene Berman,
Prevention Coordinator for U-46, and the coordinator of this new program
agrees.
The training took place at the Motorola Training Center in Shaumburg thanks to
CRFC's Board member, Kathleen Bryan, VP and Director of Motorola. Kathleen and
her colleague, Kathleen Massey, joined Paul Glaser and Linda Johnson from the
State Appellate Defender's Office in Kane County, Thesesa Hodges, a former CRFC
Board member, of Hodges, Loizzi, Eisenhammer, Rodick, & Kohn; Officer Claudio
Mercado of Streamwood and Officer Geoff Pretkelis of Bartlett to help in the
development of the program.
